A New Year….

Here we are in 2023! How did we get here? Time really does fly…..

It has been a while since I have posted…. I am currently spending some time in the California Desert! Winter here is definitely different from the East Coast! There are days where the sun is shining, and it is warm and beautiful. Other days it has been cloudy, cold and extremely windy….. Advisories not to drive as there can be sand storms over the highways……

The food here represents and reflects the folks who live here (like anywhere in the world). I am surrounded by some of the best Mexican food that I have ever eaten. So different from NYC. Even in the smallest of restaurants, I have eaten really good Mexican cuisine!

In the supermarkets the Mexican influence is quite visible. I have purchased really good homemade guacamole, homemade salsas (of course, mild or spicy), and homemade tortilla chips! These have become staples, as it is all extremely good and well made.

I went into a Mexican supermarket the other day, and saw bags of masa on a table. The masa was in different flavors and colors, including strawberry, pineapple, and yellow for tamales. I had never seen masa sold this way, and I have NEVER SEEN MASA IN DIFFERENT FLAVORS AND COLORS! I think that the flavored ones are used for baking cookies and sweetbreads, although I am not sure. I guess I will have to find out how these are all worked with!

There is much to be discovered in this wonderful cuisine; and I intend to learn more while I am in this area. I plan to start learning to make different dishes, as I can purchase all of the appropriate ingredients here…..

Here is what I plan to make: Tortilla Soup, Chicken Enchiladas, Red and Green Salsas, and of course, Tamales! I will keep you posted about my attempts and achievements (or failures).

As the CulinaryAdventure continues…..and expands…….
